Brain Or Head Injuries, Concussions

A head injury generally refers to a laceration of the scalp, skull fracture or similar injury involving trauma to the head. However, when someone suffers an injury to the head, traumatic brain injury (“TBI”) may be possible. The most common type of brain injury is a closed head injury, which is sometimes the result of the head striking another object such as the ground in a playground accident or a window in a car accident.

In a car accident, a closed head injury, concussion or TBI can also be caused when the head, neck and/or upper body are violently thrust about in the car (as with whiplash) causing the brain to strike the inside of the skull and become injured. TBIs can also be the result of a penetrating injury.

There are two main types of closed head injuries which can cause the following or additional issues:

Primary brain damage: Damage occurs immediately at the time of impact and may include:

  • Skull fracture
  • Lacerations to the brain, caused by the brain shifting inside the skull
  • Blood clots and uncontrolled bleeding
  • Contusions
  • Nerve damage
  • Secondary brain damage: Damage can evolve after the trauma has occurred such as:
  • Brain swelling
  • Fever
  • Mood changes
  • Blood clots
  • Brain activity disruption such as epilepsy
  • Anxiety
  • Memory loss

A victim of traumatic brain injury can face many other complications aside from those listed above. If damage is sustained in certain areas of the brain, the victim could lose the ability to speak or form coherent sentences. If the optic nerve is injured, the person could lose his or her eyesight. In extreme cases, the brain sustains so much damage in an accident that the person never fully regains consciousness.

Traumatic brain injuries can take a toll on an entire family, not just the person who has been injured. The financial and emotional implications of caring for someone who has suffered a traumatic brain injury can be difficult to manage.

At Ellis Law, we are always careful to be cognizant and understanding of what victims of TBI and their families are going through.
