Holidays are always a dangerous time to be on the road in the United States, as instances of drunk driving tend to increase. While some holidays pose more of a threat than others, the reality is that almost all holidays, major and minor, increase the risks.
Take, for example, a recent story out of New York about an accident that happened over Memorial Day weekend. Police report that one vehicle was heading south, going down State Route 9. Another vehicle was at the intersection with Ushers Road, heading east. It had stopped because of the traffic light and was waiting to continue.
As that car waited, the vehicle on State Route 9 “left its lane of travel” and slammed into the stopped car. A husband and wife inside the vehicle were both killed. They were just 33 and 32 years old.
Three other people were in the car with them at the time, and some of those individuals ended up with serious injuries, though they lived through the crash.
Reports say that the driver of the car that hit them, who also survived, is 58 years old. Police think he was intoxicated at the time, and he’s facing multiple charges, including those for vehicular manslaughter and aggravated vehicular homicide.
This story shows how you can’t always avoid the danger on the road. That second car was stopped, the driver made no mistakes, and they had no way to avoid the intoxicated driver in the other vehicle. That’s somewhat daunting, to say the least, and it shows why it’s so important for the families of those who pass away to know what legal options they have after a crash.
