Cycling in the city is inherently dangerous, and one rider was recently involved in an accident in Brooklyn. Tragically, they were killed in the crash.

Per reports, the incident happened right around 11 p.m. on Thursday, June 27. A 57-year-old man was riding down Sutter Ave, heading west. A white Hyundai with an 18-year-old driver was passing him when the car struck him.

The impact was serious enough that the rider flew off of his bike, slammed into the windshield of the car and shattered it. The car’s driver actually injured his hand as a result, and he had to go to a hospital for treatment.

The emergency crews did what they could and rushed the injured cyclist to Brookdale University Medical Center, but he passed away from his injuries. The reports noted that he was only about a half a mile from the home where he lived at the time of the accident.

When he died, the man became the 14th cyclist to get involved in a fatal wreck that year. “The number of cyclists killed in 2019 has already surpassed the number killed in the entirety of the prior year,” said one transportation expert, explaining just how bad things have gotten. These are the types of risks that cyclists face every day, and the total deaths in 2019 are on pace to be well above what they have seen in recent years.
